The Tshemba Foundation is a non-profit organisation with a vision of fair and equal healthcare for all people in South Africa’s rural northeast. This unique medical volunteering programme provides the opportunity for healthcare professionals to treat, teach and learn, while also finding refuge in the quiet and beauty of a private game reserve. Tshemba’s aim is to attract healthcare professionals both locally and internationally from a wide range of disciplines, to volunteer their time and expertise for short-or long-term stays. Our volunteers contribute to existing services, supporting and complementing the work of local staff.

In addition to the above service areas, Tshemba has also partnered with the Mpumalanga Department of Health and Tintswalo Hospital to create a modern, state of the art, eye clinic and cataract operating theatre to screen and remedy common, treatable eye diseases. To date, Tshemba’s volunteering ophthalmologists, accompanied and assisted by volunteering optometrists and eye theatre nurses, have helped hundreds of people living in rural Mpumalanga.

The focus of our volunteer effort is Tintswalo Hospital, which is based at Acornhoek, about 38 km from the Kruger National Park’s Orpen Gate.We also support a number of  primary healthcare and NGO clinics in the area, as well as a growing community outreach programme
